Seeing the Trees

I was so excited to get this email from Ted Owens, president of Syncronos Design, as he’s a VIP in my world—both a reader and an advertiser! Ted’s response to last week’s entry about our switch to 100 percent recycled paper (and some of the challenges that presents) was especially heartening as he’s solidly aligned with my way of thinking! (Oh, I just love when that happens…)

I’m posting Ted’s great response here (with his permission). It speaks for itself.

“Your switching to 100% recycled paper is a great move. The slight increase in dot gain in this issue is worth the environmental gain.

Image quality is important to me, as I am an advertiser in your magazine (the 'Building With Awareness' DVD on building with natural materials). Without a side-by-side comparison with the previous issue, I was not aware of the change, as the print quality was still within very acceptable limits. My feeling is that through some experimentation you will find out what needs to be done in prepress to obtain the best images possible on this new paper. Because your magazine is based on promoting ideas that are easier on the environment, the move to a more environmentally sound paper is standing behind the basis of your publication. You should promote your bold move any way that you can and challenge other magazines to make the switch as well. Good job!”
