Weekend Project: Stone Bath Mat

Robyn Griggs Lawrence thumbnail I’m in need of a new bath mat. Instead of heading to the mall, I’m planning to make Susan Wasinger’s simple, smart DIY stone bath mat, which will feel great underfoot and looks like a cinch to make. The mat is made using a simple wood frame, lined with wire mesh and filled with small smooth stones, which you can buy by the bag at garden centers if you don’t have a stash of your own. About 10 pounds should do it.

DIY Stone Bath Mat

1. Make a simple frame of pine "L" trim, about 18 inches by 26 inches. Mitre the corners and nail and glue together. You can finish the wood with a low-VOC waterproof sealer.

2. Use 5 cross pieces of 1/4-inch flat trim to create supports for the frame’s bottom. The wire mesh will lie on them. Use 1 piece at each end and 3 equally spaced in the middle.

3. Use brass screen or galvanized wire mesh (1/2-inch rabbit fence, available at hardware stores, works well). Cut the mesh with wire snips to be about 1/2-inch smaller than the frame in both directions. Bend it into the frame.

4. Smooth the wire and, if necessary, secure it to the cross supports with construction staples. Add the stones.
