National Bike to Work poster for 2013National Bike to Work Week has become a much-loved spring ritual in communities across the United States. Sponsored by the League of American Bicyclists, the annual weeklong event promotes cycling in many forms, but especially bicycle commuting as an alternative to driving.

The 2013 Bike to Work Week event is celebrated from May 13 to 17, and culminates in National Bike to Work Day on Friday, May 17. Many communities have scheduled special events, including rides, to mark the occasion. You can search for activities in your area using the Bike Month Special Events database on the League's website.

Bicycling continues to grow in popularity as gas prices soar, and as concerns about the planet's health encourage people to engage in forms of green transportation. The number of people engaged in bicycle commuting has increased by 47 percent since 2000, according to the American Community Survey conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau. The League's goal with its Bike to Work events is to "celebrate the unique power of the bicycle and the many reasons we ride," and to encourage even more people to take up cycling — for health, transportation, the environment and personal satisfaction.

The League of American Bicyclists offers a variety of Bike to Work materials on its website at May is National Bike Month! See what's happening in your community, put on your helmet, then get out and ride.
