Robyn Griggs Lawrence thumbnailThis week is Hemp History Week. Because I so strongly believe that allowing American farmers to grow this incredibly versatile plant could make a huge difference for our planet and for all of us, I will post a blog each day in celebration.

Today we’ll keep it simple. Here are three great reasons to make hemp cultivation legal in the United States.

1. Food. Nutritious hemp seeds can be used to make ice-cream, non-dairy beverages and protein powders. “Hemp seeds are a rich source of protein, fat, and fiber and can be made into an oil, butter, or protein powder,” Shoshanna Levy writes in Foodista.

2. Health. Hemp oil is used to make good-for-you body-care products such as soaps, lotions and lip balms. Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soaps states that hemp oil “improves our soaps because it contains such a high proportion of poly-unsaturated fatty acids which make our soap milder and less drying.”

3. Shelter. Hemp fibers can be made into environmental friendly paper, fabric and building materials. This home in Asheville, North Carolina, was constructed of hempcrete, a mixture of industrial hemp shiv and lime-based binder. Check out this video to learn more.
