Mobile Egg House Breaks New Ground

Since Natural Home first covered Jay Shafer’s 130-square-foot Tumbleweed house in 2000, we’ve had a weakness for tiny houses. In our exploration of smaller homes for a regularly recurring department, we’ve unearthed some gems. My new favorite, from China, is about as natural as it gets

Dai Haifei, a 24-year-old Beijing architect, built this 6-foot-tall, solar-powered, egg-shaped house from bamboo, wood and grass seed. While he still needs to work out waste-disposal and heat-preservation issues, Dai told the China Daily that the home could easily be mass-produced. “The seeds will grow in the natural environment, and it’s cold-proof,” he says.

Small enough to fit on a sidewalk, the home has provided Dai with rent-free living until just recently—when city officials told him he had to move.
