With a few slabs of granite, your cast iron stove can perform like a soapstone stove for a fraction of the price.

Pack slabs of granite around your cast iron stove to create a thermal mass.

During the coldest winter months, I like to place granite slabs on and beside my cast iron woodstove.

The granite holds the heat long after the fire has gone out, keeping the room warm until morning. It’s a great way to get the advantage of thermal mass from a high-mass soapstone stove without the high price tag.
