The Natural Resources Defense Council recently announced the winners of its first Growing Green Awards, a contest designed to honor farmers, business leaders, and promoters of sustainable food.

Will Allen, a city farmer in Milwaukee, WI, won the Food Producer award and the $10,000 grand prize. Allen is the founder and CEO of the Growing Power National Training and Community Food Center, where he operates an organic city farm for an underserved community. Fedele Bauccio won the Business Leaders award for his work as founder and CEO of Bon Appétit Management Company, which promotes locally grown, sustainable food sources. The Thought Leader award went to James Harvie. Harvie is a founding member of Health Care Without Harm, a campaign to support food’s role in reducing health problems such as obesity.
