Mother Earth News Fair transforms Seven Springs Mountain Resort into sustainable living showcase
SEVEN SPRINGS, Pa. (Sept. 9, 2013) — What do heirloom tomatoes, DIY solar panel demonstrations and spinning wheels have in common?
They’re just a few of the activities attendees can experience at the 4th annual Mother Earth News Fair, taking place Sept. 20-22 at Seven Springs Mountain Resort, 777 Waterwheel Drive. The Fair runs noon to 7 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.
Fairgoers can participate in these activities throughout the weekend:
Live Poultry Processing: Organic farmer Daniel Salatin and Featherman Equipment’s David Schafer will show how to slaughter chickens humanely, safely and efficiently, regardless of the number of birds to be processed. 9:30 – 11 a.m. Sunday only
Solar Panel Building: Don and Dan Adams from Earthineer will conduct a solar panel build throughout the weekend. Attendees will see the process from framing, to tabbing, to encapsulation, and can ask questions.
Heirloom Tomato Tasting: Southern Exposure Seed Exchange will host an heirloom vegetable and fruit tasting for attendees to try heirloom tomato and pepper varieties, plus melons, apples, roasted garlic and more. Attendees can also bring their own varieties to share.
Alternative Energy Vehicle Show: DIY, high-mileage vehicle designers, builders and drivers will display their cars and answer questions about ownership, operation and more.
Stock a Frugal, Self-Sufficient Pantry: Lisa Kivirist shows how to save money while always having what you need by buying in bulk, organizing the pantry and making several staples.
Learn to Hand-Spin and Weave: Carol Ann Rak will demonstrate how to prepare fiber for spinning, hand-spin different fibers into yarn using drop spindles and spinning wheels, and hand-weave on a rigid heddle and four-harness loom.
“Self-sufficiency can save money and our natural resources. We want to give our attendees the tools to explore a range of sustainable living possibilities up close, to see what works for them,” says Andrew Perkins, the Fair’s director.
In addition, the Fair will offer more than 240 hands-on workshops on organic gardening, cooking and food preservation, renewable energy, homesteading, small-scale livestock, green building, natural health, green transportation, and related topics. Local and national experts will lead the sessions.
Attendees can also find a medicinal herb display, children’s activities, vendor and livestock demonstrations, a green shopping pavilion, and local and organic food options.
Adult tickets cost $25 for a weekend pass or $18 for a one-day pass in advance, or $35 and $25, respectively, at the gate. Children 17 and under get in free. To purchase advance tickets, go to MotherEarthNewsFair.com or call toll-free 800-234-3368.
