SEVEN SPRINGS, Pa. (Aug. 26, 2013) — Interested in producing your own food and shelter as a means to slash those ever-rising bills? Find out how at the 4th annual Mother Earth News Fair.

The event takes place Sept. 20-22 at Seven Springs Mountain Resort, 777 Waterwheel Drive. Gates open at noon Friday, Sept. 20 and close at 7 p.m. The Fair will run 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.

More than 240 hands-on workshops will cover organic gardening, cooking and food preservation, renewable energy, small-scale livestock, green building, DIY projects, natural health, green transportation, and related topics. Sustainable and rural lifestyle experts from across the country will lead the sessions.

Nationally known keynote speakers will offer attendees a broader perspective, including:

  • Actor, activist and author Ed Begley Jr. will share how he has “greened” his life and show how others can do the same. Begley’s presentation is sponsored by Envirolet.
  • Organic farmer and author Joel Salatin will offer advice for those interested in turning their part-time hobby farm into a full-time business but who are concerned about the logistics involved. Salatin’s Polyface Farm was featured in the documentary Food Inc.
  • Barbara Pleasant, Mother Earth News contributing gardening editor, will present strategies to grow, eat, store and preserve homegrown vegetables and fruits year-round.
  • Joe King from Butler County’s Freedom Farms and co-star of GACtv’s “Farm Kings,” will share how family farms can prosper in today’s economic environment.
  • Food preservation expert Sherri Brooks Vinton will show different methods to preserve food, from canning to fermenting and infusing.
  • Dan Chiras, director of The Evergreen Institute, will share how decreasing costs have made solar and other renewable energy technologies cost-competitive – and how this will affect the country’s economy.

In addition to workshops, the Fair will host a medicinal herb display, children’s activities, vendor and livestock demonstrations, a green shopping pavilion, an alternative-fuel vehicle show, and local and organic food options.
