FAIRGOERS GET TASTE AND FEEL FOR SUSTAINABLE LIVING
Mother Earth News Fair offers food tastings, adds solar panel building demonstrations, Farmer Olympics and electric vehicle test drives

SEVEN SPRINGS, Pa. (Sept. 5, 2012) — What do DIY solar panel demonstrations, flavorful heirloom tomatoes and teams battling for Olympic glory have in common?

They’re just a few of the activities attendees can experience for themselves at the Mother Earth News Fair, taking place Sept. 21-23 at Seven Springs Mountain Resort, 777 Waterwheel Drive.

“When you can heat your home through mainly solar energy or even cut your grocery bills in half by growing or raising your own food, the reward and sense of accomplishment can be very uplifting,” says Event Director Andrew Perkins. “We want our attendees to know they can do this and, with help from our esteemed contributors, we can show them how.”

The Fair offers these and other activities throughout the weekend:

Solar Panel Building Demonstration: Don and Dan Adams from Earthineer will conduct a live solar panel build throughout the weekend. Attendees will see the process from framing, to tabbing, to encapsulation and can ask questions.

Heirloom Tomato Tasting: Southern Exposure Seed Exchange will host an heirloom vegetable and fruit tasting for attendees to try dozens of heirloom tomato and pepper varieties, plus melons, apples, roasted garlic and more. Attendees can also bring their own varieties to share.

Farmer Olympics: From noon to 2 p.m. Sunday, teams of farmers and community members will test their skill, agility, teamwork and knowledge in competitions including the potato harvest scramble, tomato-trellising relay, box building, fence moving and farm trivia. Sponsored by the Pennsylvania Association for Sustainable Agriculture.

Ford Focus Electric and Ford C-MAX Hybrid Test Drives: Ford Motor Company will offer test drives of the 2013 C-MAX Hybrid, its new five-passenger multi-activity vehicle, and the 2013 Focus Electric as part of the Go Further Tour. Attendees will receive meal vouchers worth up to $15 to use at the Fair when they test-drive a vehicle.

Seed Swap: Southern Exposure also will host a seed swap for attendees to exchange fruit, vegetable, herb and flower seeds from their own gardens with others.

Alternative Energy Vehicle Show: Attendees can visit with designers, builders and drivers of DIY, high-mileage cars, including Mother Earth News’ 100-mpg sports car.

Build a Straw Bale Wall: Designer Sigi Koko will show attendees how to build insulating straw bale walls that also look good. Saturday’s class will cover stacking straw bales and coating them with nontoxic clay plaster, while Sunday attendees can learn to make and apply finish plasters and natural paints.

Spinning Rare-Breed Wool: Jeri Robinson-Lawrence and her daughters will demonstrate how to spin wool from rare-breed sheep into yarn using both drop spindles and spinning wheels. Attendees can try spinning using drop spindles that will be provided.

In addition, dozens of hands-on workshops will cover organic gardening, real food, renewable energy, small-scale livestock, green building and remodeling, DIY projects, natural health, green transportation, and related topics. Nationally known and local green lifestyle and rural living experts will lead the workshops.

The Fair also will host children’s activities, a green shopping pavilion, vendor and livestock demonstrations, and local and organic food options.

Adult tickets are $30 for a weekend pass or $15 for a one-day pass in advance, or $35 and $20, respectively, at the gate. Children 17 and under get in free. To purchase advance tickets, go to MotherEarthNewsFair.com or call toll-free 800-234-3368.

The Fair is sponsored by Botanical Interests, Brinsea, Central Boiler, Deltec Homes, Earthineer, Envirolet, Ford Motor Company, Gorilla Glue, Manna Pro, Mary’s Gone Crackers, Meyer Hatchery, O’Keeffe’s, Purina Mills and the Weston A. Price Foundation.
