NATIONAL MAGAZINE HONORS LAWRENCE FOR SUSTAINABLE INITIATIVES
Mother Earth News recognizes city as one of its ‘Great Places You’ve (Maybe) Never Heard Of’
LAWRENCE (Sept. 13, 2012) – Lawrence has earned a spot on Mother Earth News’ annual “Great Places You’ve (Maybe) Never Heard Of” list. Mother Earth News, the leading magazine dedicated to sustainable living, features eight communities in its October-November issue, on sale Sept. 25.
In addition to its dynamic college-town feel and can-do spirit, Lawrence ranks highly for:
- A generations-long history of producing hydroelectric power via the Bowersock Dam
- Its rich history as the epicenter of pre-Civil War abolitionism and “Bleeding Kansas” conflicts
- Outdoor recreation options, including numerous parks, biking and running trails, and nature preserves
- Cultural opportunities via Haskell Indian Nations University and the University of Kansas
- The Merc Community Market and Deli’s selection of locally produced goods and strong following
“Lawrence appreciates sustainable and healthy living, with the same folks who go crazy for Jayhawks basketball also celebrating farmers markets and local foods,” says K.C. Compton, senior editor for the magazine.
The Great Places list serves as a fun way to recognize cities and towns that demonstrate positive civic energy, invest in the local economy and develop meaningful environmental initiatives. Nominations come from Mother Earth News readers, social media communities and staff.
The other cities selected for this year’s list are Charleston, S.C.; Denton, Texas; Dover, N.H.; Golden, Colo.; Hilo, Hawaii; Port Townsend, Wash.; and Red Lodge, Mont.
