NATIONAL MAGAZINE HONORS CHARLESTON FOR SUSTAINABLE INITIATIVES
Mother Earth News recognizes city as a ‘Great Place You’ve (Maybe) Never Heard Of’
CHARLESTON (Sept. 13, 2012) – Charleston has earned a spot on Mother Earth News’ annual “Great Places You’ve (Maybe) Never Heard Of” list. Mother Earth News, the leading magazine dedicated to sustainable living, features eight communities in its October-November issue, on sale Sept. 25.
In addition to its well-documented historic and cultural offerings, Charleston ranks highly for its many public- and private-sector green initiatives, including:
- Clemson University’s $98 million wind-generator testing facility, because of its potential to tap into South Carolina’s wind energy
- The Sustainability Institute’s energy-efficiency efforts, which have saved more than $2 million in utility costs in existing buildings
- Boeing’s solar- and biomass-powered jet facility
- The Circular Congregational Church’s energy-efficient addition
- Residents’ access to many parks and miles of shoreline
“Charleston blends its rich history with innovative green technologies and sustainable city planning for beautiful results,” says K.C. Compton, senior editor for the magazine.
The Great Places list serves as a fun way to recognize cities and towns that demonstrate positive civic energy, invest in the local economy and develop meaningful environmental initiatives. Nominations come from Mother Earth News readers, social media communities and staff.
The other cities selected for this year’s list are Denton, Texas; Dover, N.H.; Golden, Colo.; Hilo, Hawaii; Lawrence, Kan.; Port Townsend, Wash.; and Red Lodge, Mont.
