Events held throughout September teach practical ways to “Live the Good Life”

TOPEKA, Kan. (Aug. 30, 2012) — Have you wanted to learn how to garden but aren’t sure where to start? Or maybe you’re looking for others who would enjoy spending a day canning tomatoes. Chances are, you can find people to help you out in your own neighborhood.

Regardless of what end of the spectrum you’re on, the inaugural International Homesteading Education Month this September can help you reach that next step.

Grit and Mother Earth News, two of the oldest U.S. publications focusing on rural and sustainable lifestyles, co-sponsor this celebration of modern homesteading. They created a searchable online hub where organizations and individuals across North America have registered more than 300 tours, workshops, open houses and related events open to the public. Topics include vegetable gardening, beekeeping, raising livestock, green building, using renewable energy, making soap, preserving foods, maintaining property and more.

For those interested in hosting an event, the hub’s Speaker Finder lists approximately 100 experts who are available to teach about this range of homesteading topics.

“There is a modern homesteading movement developing as people seek more meaningful, eco-friendly and secure lifestyles. Homesteading Education Month taps the power of the Internet to help neighbors learn from neighbors,” explains Cheryl Long, editor in chief of Mother Earth News.

To add motivation and inspiration to the project, Mother Earth News named its first Homesteaders of the Year in its August-September issue, on sale now. Grit will name its winners in the November-December issue, on newsstands Oct. 23.

Current and would-be homesteaders can enter the Holy Cow! Homesteading Sweepstakes. This $11,000 prize package includes a registered Highland heifer, a sawmill, log splitter, a beekeeping kit, chicken coop and incubator, poultry feed, and more.

Grit and Mother Earth News also teamed up to provide homesteaders with links to recommended books to build their resource libraries.
