Mother Earth News names Moscow to annual “Great Places You’ve Never Heard Of” list
National publication honors the Idaho city’s vibrant arts scene, environmental restoration
TOPEKA, Kan. (July 21, 2008) — Nestled among rolling hills, Moscow, Idaho, emanates a rich, energetic vibe. Its dozens of artists, combined with the civic can-do attitude that preserves the natural resources in the area, lands Moscow on Mother Earth News’ third annual “Great Places You’ve Never Heard Of” list. Mother Earth News, the world's leading magazine dedicated to sustainable living, features nine selected communities in its August/September issue, on sale July 29.
Author David Wann cites Moscow’s successful Artwalk and Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival events, along with a united effort to clean up Paradise Creek, as a few of the reasons to spotlight this Northwestern town of 22,300.
The annual Great Places list serves as a fun way to recognize smaller cities and towns that combine classic elements, such as comfortable climate and compelling architecture, with positive civic energy, investment in the local economy and meaningful initiatives for the environment. And, yes, the editors know that some people have heard of these locales.
“Cities like Moscow show that ‘off the beaten path’ certainly doesn’t mean ‘boring,’” says Bryan Welch, publisher and editorial director for the magazine. “Mother Earth News focuses on cool things you can do to live wisely and create community, and we think our readers would really identify with a place like Moscow.”
Other cities making this year’s list are Ames, Iowa; Berea, Ky.; Bethel, Maine; Bisbee, Ariz.; Greenbelt, Md.; San Luis Obispo, Calif.; Traverse City, Mich.; and Viroqua, Wisc.
