GRIT Managing Editor, Kellsey Trimble, sat down with Patricia Foreman and Joe Putnam to discuss the best ways of preventing and treating common flock problems. From pests and predators to illnesses, dietary considerations, and the effectiveness of electric fences, listen as these three converse about the various issues they’ve experienced when raising poultry and how they keep their birds healthy.

Patricia Foreman - Gossomer Foundation


Patricia Foreman is a sustainable agriculture author, local foods activist, and popular speaker. She (and her co-presenter, chicken celebrity Oprah Hen-Free) has presented workshops and book signings at major national festivals and conferences across the United States. She is the author of City Chicks. To help “Chick Start America,” she developed the Backyard Chicken Keeper Certification course. Foreman graduated from Purdue University with degrees in animal science and pharmacy. She has a master's of public affairs from Indiana University’s Graduate School of Public and Environmental Affairs.

 Joe Putnam Joe Putnam works as a marketing copywriter and occasional shepherd for Premier 1 Supplies. He frequently appears in Premier's instructional how-to videos on YouTube. Putnam can be found at farm industry events, where his gentle, hands-on approach makes even the most complex farming topics simple. When not at work, Putnam spends time on his family's 40-acre farmstead in southeast Iowa. There the family raises cattle, sheep, poultry, multiple gardens, corn, hay, and oats.
