Get to know Ruth Rogers Clausen of Timber Press.
What are you going to speak about at the MOTHER EARTH NEWS FAIR?
I’m speaking about how to have a garden in deer country and what you can do to minimize the amount of damage that comes with neighborhood deer. I will illustrate and talk about many plants that deer usually avoid and give tips on keeping down damage without fencing, which is expensive and often impractical.
What are you most looking forward to sharing with FAIR attendees?
I look forward to sharing what I have learned about gardening in deer country, without the angst of spraying or fencing.
Tell us about your background with your particular topic.
I have gardened in Westchester County, NY for 11 years, where there are plenty of deer in the suburbs. They devour millions of dollars worth of landscape plants each year. I hate spraying, and since we have a stream running through the property I don’t want to cut the deer off from their drinking hole. Bedrock is close to the surface and fencing would be exorbitantly expensive. I try different things each year and have tested the plants I tout!
Why should fairgoers attend your presentation?
If you also have a deer problem and want to have a colorful garden, please come and hear my suggestions. I am anxious to share them with you – and hear from you too.
How will you get to the FAIR, and how far do you have to travel?
I will drive. I think it is about 200 miles.
What are you most looking forward to at the FAIR?
I’m looking forward to hearing the other speakers and joining in the fun of the FAIR.
What advice do you have for attendees?
Wear comfortable shoes and come with an open mind to learn new things.
If you were stranded on a deserted island and could have only one thing, what would you choose?
Compost!
Thanks, Ruth. We’ll see you at the FAIR!
