DIY Seed Starting Kits (Video)

Learn how to make biodegradable seed starting kits out of newspaper in this how-to video by MOTHER EARTH NEWS editor Hannah Kincaid.

By Hannah Kincaid

Avoid spending too much money on pre-made seed starting kits and instead use materials that you have around your home, such as newspaper, brown paper bags or paper towel rolls. When your seedlings are ready to be transplanted to your garden, simply drop the entire biodegradable bundle into the ground, without disrupting the sensitive roots.

If you tuck the ends inside instead of outside, they wouldn't be hanging on and the pot would be sturdier. Even better, if you make a taller cylinder, like 1/4 of a full double sheet of newspaper, and roll it on a bottle or old pill jar that is the size you need, you can tuck the bottom under and smash it with the bottle to crimp it and it will sit up and not need paper clips to hold it closed. No tearing paper needed. Tearing paper weakens it. And newspaper can use all the help it can get once it's wet.
