Slugs love to hide in my straw mulch and feast on emerging beans. I’ve had to replant several times. Last year, I purchased some curly “copper” scouring pads, unraveled them and cut each one into four or five strips to place as collars around each bean hole as I sowed the seed. They were a great success. What’s even better, I can reuse the collars each year.

Our guess is that the sharp metal edges of the scrubbers are most likely repelling the slugs. —Mother
