A reader shares her mother's gardening tips for growing roses and carrots in the garden.

My mom had two great ideas when we were growing up on gardening tips for growing roses and carrots. I am 71 now but still use them:

To rid roses of black spot, mix:
1 gallon of water
1 tablespoon baking soda
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
1 tablespoon dish detergent

Spray once a week.

When planting carrots, sprinkle dry coffee grounds in the soil with them. Also, coffee grounds around herbs will give them a quick perk!
