I recently built an earth-bermed greenhouse here in southern Idaho and have been eating tomatoes, green beans, Swiss chard, cucumbers, crookneck and summer squash I grew in it. My tomatoes and cucumbers grew clear to the ceiling!
The cold frames in the front of the earth-sheltered greenhouse are vented into each other and controlled with a thermostat and fan. The hot air in the greenhouse is redirected through underground irrigation pipe into the growing beds, which saves all that solar heat for nighttime use. This backyard greenhouse is bermed up on the north side with a 6-foot wall. I used recycled patio doors for the glazing — they were only $10 each.
