U.S. Green Building Council Promotes Green Schools

Schools have a lot to gain by going green. Increased efficiency can reduce operating costs, cleaner indoor air means fewer student sick days and better design produces a healthy environment in which to learn. The seeds for green schools are planted at the grassroots level with parents, teachers and communities, but state lawmakers—who sometimes need a little encouragement and knowledge to get the job done—hold the power to make change.

To help out these representatives, the U.S. Green Building Council has developed 'Greening Our Schools: A State Legislator’s Guide to the Best Policy Practices,' a toolkit that provides comprehensive information on green schools in each state. The toolkit is part of the USGBC's “50 for 50” green schools caucus initiative, which aims to create a green schools caucus in every state legislature in the next two years. Caucus members have access to information on the latest green building policies, including trends, cost-benefit studies and incentives offered to advance green building. The “50 for 50” program also strives to connect like-minded legislators across the nation not only to each other but to experts in their communities such as architects, engineers and contractors.

As of March 1, 32 states have formed green schools caucuses. To find out if your state is one of them, visit the “50 for 50” program’s homepage. If you state hasn’t made the list, find out how you can join or start a green schools committee in your area. Your kids will thank you.
