Barter markets are basically just great big swap meets, where people bring stuff they don’t want to trade for stuff they do want. It makes perfect sense, but the idea has just never caught on with mall-lulled Americans. In Spain, writes Kristen Dirksen of faircompanies, barter markets are going mainstream—and she offers a taste in this video about a Barcelona market. "You don't need to shop," explains one woman. "The only thing you have to do is look at home for things you don't use at all. Online, you look up ‘exchange market' and you'll find every week an exchange market in every neighborhood."
The movement is spreading throughout Europe. It’s a trend I would love to see go global.
