The New Issues Are Here

Remember in the movie The Jerk, when Steve Martin came running in from the curb shouting, “The new phone books are here? The new phone books are here?” (Am I dating myself? It was a 70s movie . . .) Well, today the FedEx man brought my advance copies of the July/August issue of Natural Home & Garden, and that’s just how I feel. Even after all the times I looked over those pages before the magazine went to press, I’m still like a little kid when the real thing finally arrives. How do the photos hold up in print? How does the whole issue hang together? How’s the “flip”? (That’s publishing lingo for how a magazine looks and feels when you flip through it while you’re waiting in line at Whole Foods.)

My favorite articles in this issue are about color and paint (such as 'A Paint Primer')—two things that every homeowner (and renter) has to pay attention to at some point. Color seems like such a simple aspect of home decorating, but it can make all the difference. In my own somewhat dark home office—which has tiny little windows that are mostly blocked by big maple trees—a coat of “slicker yellow” paint has made all the difference. We transformed our den using Terra Med plaster, which is a piece of cake to apply and is just so cool. I love articles like these, which show me how to make a big difference in my house with simple, easy fixes.

In this issue, we also stepped out onto a limb and offered our picks for a list of the top 10 eco-architects in the United States. Making this list was an agonizing and painstaking process, and we’re all holding our breath as we’ve likely left out someone very important. The good news is, we’ll compile another list next year—so start sending in your nominations now! And in the meantime, check out these eco-heroes of the design world—the men and women who are changing our world.
