Sustainable Alternatives to 'Buy Nothing Day'

On this, the biggest shopping day of the year, I've heard many pleas to observe ' Buy Nothing Day' and make a statement against our out-of-control culture of consumerism. However, I'd like to present another option: If you are planning to exchange gifts with others this holiday season, you could make a difference by simply rethinking your purchases, and the manner in which you make them.

There are plenty of gifts that, in addition to brightening someone's holiday, will also make a difference for our planet. You can make a donation to a worthy cause in someone's name, or even just shop online through a carbon-offsetting site like EarthMoment.

And don't forget your favorite green businesses: Companies that go the extra mile to operate sustainably deserve your business (for my friends and family that might be reading this, Chipotle gift certificates are a great idea …); and giving special consideration to local shops instead of national chain retailers.
