Oxfam America Unwrapped: Meaningful Holiday Gift Ideas

Already stumped on what to get your loved ones for the holidays? What about a camel or a donkey? Or maybe manure? They may not sound like something you’d enjoy, but to a hungry child in Asia, gifts like these are a welcome sight. You can purchase them on your loved one’s behalf through Oxfam America Unwrapped, a group dedicated to relieving hunger, poverty and injustice internationally.

Similar to Heifer International, your gift will go to those who need it most. The group provides many options, from $12 soap to a $10,000 house. There are a variety of gifts under $50, such as sheep, a dozen chicks, medical kits or even a school desk and chair. You can choose gifts that pertain to animals, the environment, education, and more. One of my personal favorites: For $90, you can provide gender rights training to three members of a community.

I know what you’re thinking — how do I know this isn’t a scam? Oxfam America is supported by the Better Business Bureau as a true charity, and by Charity Navigator.

Oxfam America even has a gift registry so people can work together as a group to gather donations.
