You don’t have to be a middle-schooler sitting in the cafeteria to watch this bargain go down. We like to pack our lunch no matter what our age and we like to compare what we’ve brought.

That’s why, when MOTHER EARTH NEWS staff members were given a lunchopolis lunchbox by Enviro Products, they had to raffle because everyone could conceive of a use for it. This lunchbox encourages a garbage-free meal with four reusable, microwave- and dishwasher-safe containers, and a reusable water bottle that are all BPA-free.

“Lunchopolis is litter-free, which means no more sandwich bags, tinfoil, juice boxes or other unnecessary waste to throw away,” says Jennifer Johnson, account coordinator for ChristieCommunications. “Trash free lunchboxes help eliminate the 3.5 billion pounds of lunchbox garbage generated every year.”

It’s important to make healthy food decisions, and by storing our food-to-go in reusable containers, we can also make healthy decisions for the environment.

Here is a suggested menu from the lunchopolis website. Portion sizes in these recipes relate to the size of the reusable food-storage containers.

red quinoa with peas and pesto sauce (whole)
peach and blueberry salad (half)
mini mozzarellas (quarter)

fruited chicken salad (whole)
celery sticks (half)
peanut butter (quarter)
whole grain crackers (quarter)

breadsticks with prosciutto (whole)
yogurt with maple syrup (half)
cherry tomatoes  (quarter)
granola (quarter)

steak sandwich with whole grain mustard (whole)
cold green beans with mustard vinaigrette (half)
goat cheese (quarter)
grapes (quarter)

brie and grape sandwich on baguette (whole)
grated carrot salad (half)
hardboiled egg (quarter)

You can pack a litter-free lunch using any lunch box. Maybe you should do an article about that.
