Now is a Great Moment for Humankind

Now is the moment when our uniquely objective perspective and our enterprising intellect are engaged in what may be the most important challenge faced by our species so far.

Other species have damaged their habitats or lost them to environmental disaster. The dinosaurs, the Saber-toothed Tiger and the Woolly Mammoth died out. Many species routinely go through periods of catastrophic population collapse and reestablished themselves in some new biological equilibrium. Lemmings spring to mind. But none of them, so far as we know, are consciously aware of the natural forces at work. They couldn’t conceptualize the fact that their own reproduction, their natural consumption and expansion, played a part in causing the pain of their population’s collapse.

Nature has lots of tools at her disposal for controlling species that cause habitat damage. Famine and disease are her most potent weapons, effective and unpleasant.

We, on the other hand, can conceptualize our effect on the environment and we might, if we wish to, avoid the suffering Nature will inflict.

And we could restore the astonishing garden into which we were born – the Earth.

I can’t think of a more inspirational goal.

The world is indeed what we make, Sue, and we are making a real mess of it. Incidently, what do LOL and BTW mean? I see them a lot but no-one ever defines them. Would you? Please? Thanks. Brian

If it were only so! Truth be told the only time the human animal will make that drastic of a change is when they are forced to. We will not see true change untill Gondalas are the chief mode of transportation in New York.

I've really enjoyed these last two blogs that center around visualization. I've often thought about how visualization is important on a personal level whether it be that moment before you strike the cue ball or when you sit down for a serious talk with somebody you care about. It is undobtedly useful. Bringing it to a macrocosmic level is definitely worth pursuing. One thing that I think about is how does one figure out what they want to visualize happening? For me it has to do with being grateful. When one gives thanks for the blessings in their life then they are forced to discover what is important to them, in a sense these are their values. Once they recognize this, then they can use what they've learned to know what decisions to make and what directions to take and were back to visualization to see how we're going to accomplish what we want to accomplish. I particularly like how in your blogs that there seems to be a stream of consciousness that crosses philosophical boundaries but it sits below some Judeo-Christian allusions. There aren't enough people with the courage to attempt that.

What an interesting perspective on change Often in human history there have been times of struggle and times of massive change it is always those who are flexible and who are willing to see the opportunities in a changing world that not only survive they thrive. So instead of clinging to a dirty hurtful past we should all look to a hopeful clean future after all the world is what we make it Sue http://goinggreenish.blogspot.com/
