The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) today officially declared that global warming emissions are pollutants that endanger public health and welfare. The move will allow the agency to regulate heat-trapping emissions from power plants and automobiles under the Clean Air Act.

Below is a statement from Eli Hopson, a Union of Concerned Scientists Washington representative:

“The EPA today officially acknowledged the massive body of scientific research that shows that climate change is harming our health and environment. Heat waves, the spread of tropical diseases, and worsening air quality are all climate-related threats the EPA can help address.

“The EPA needs to establish strong emission reduction policies that complement the energy and climate legislation we expect Congress to pass this year. At the same time, the federal government must allow states to pursue their own aggressive renewable energy and clean car policies.

“By working with Congress to ensure that strong standards are coupled with a comprehensive economy-wide cap on emissions, the Obama administration can ensure that we reduce the risks of global warming while saving consumers money.”

Background Information on the Endangerment Finding: The Bush administration refused to issue this endangerment finding despite the fact the Supreme Court directed it to do so. Political appointees ignored and deliberately suppressed scientific analysis from EPA scientists urging them to act.

The Clean Air Act allows the EPA to regulate major sources of global warming emissions. These sources include power plants and vehicles, which together generate more than half of the heat-trapping emissions produced in the United States.

The following is another direct quote from Judge Osteen's decision: "In this case, EPA publicly committed to a conclusion before research had begun; excluded industry by violating the Act's procedural requirements; adjusted established procedure and scientific norms to validate the Agency's public conclusion, and aggressively utilized the Act's authority to disseminate findings to establish a de facto regulatory scheme intended to restrict Plaintiffs, products and to influence public opinion. And people would trust anything the EPA said after that? Perhaps if the Supreme Court found them so lacking, others should too. Such were the findings of the congressional panel of scientists that were put together to assist the Supreme Court with it's findings. Claim the issue is unrelated if you like. But as you can and will see, EPA is just using the same tactics over again. Global Warming Wacko's rejoice, Those of us who favor the truth will continue to secretly protect ourselves from the real problems. Well until they figure out how to tax the sun anyway.

@Kent How is it you are seeing the effects of Global Warming? Last year spring was virtually skipped. Even permaculturists in California were having a very low crop yield due to the cold weather. For the past 2 or 3 years the weather has been much colder than warmer around the globe. This year so far is proving to be rather moderate. I'm really not sure how you're seeing these effects of global warming when for the past few years the Earth has been cooler. Take a look at the Earth's climate history. What we are experiencing is completely normal; weather has always cycled like this. The government doesn't care about the Environment; they just want more money and more control. That's all this is about. Where is the push for sustainable housing, renewable energy, and organic foods? When will the government lift the hemp ban across the country? The alarmism over global warming (or "climate change") simply distracts from real environmental issues and discredits the environmental movement as a whole.

It sounds good to keep government out of our personal life but the vast majority of the US population does not know how or care to make the world a better place. I am very active outdoors (especailly for a senior citizen (snow skiing, snowshoeing, camping, fishing and hunting) and see the effect of global warming on every trip I take. Additionally I collect a minimum of a one 42 gallon trash bag of garbage on each trip. EPA needs to authority to to take the necessary steps to reduce global warming in every facet of life including car pollution and factories pollute. Morever they should take steps to positively encourage each of us to reduce our carbon footprint. I know that when I take my own reuseable container to the food store I get crazy looks from the staff and several have told me that I can not do it. Try it sometime.

Lee is right!! Why don't we look at the whole picture. 8.5 million in the U.S. is out of work and more being lay off. We are in a depression! Our government is spending like there is no tomorrow. Who is paying for this spending with so many out of work and the other half working part-time (don't forget that no one counted the self-employee that went broke and had to shut their doors). Those who have jobs will be paying taxes plus the extra taxes that federal and state had put on fuel, products, and now they want us to be tax 5 cents per plastic bags (if congress vote on this bill). I am sure this Clean Air Act is another way to tax those driving unless we go back to horse and buggie. By the way...in 2009 Congress got their raise while many American lost their jobs. Remember...next year is a voting year. Please...keep voting them out until they listen to us!! I believe in clean air but lets do it right. Right now our gov is hiting us with so many ways to tax us (creative tax)..at this time (depression) for many of us just to pay our bills...these creative taxes cause me to believe that we are becoming a third world country. I hope I am wrong!

This is an "End Around" being used to bypass the lawful means in order to push another agenda. When courts and agencies are used in this way we all lose.

Lee's comments are spot-on. The earth has always followed a 1500 year long climate cycle with small highs and lows every decade or so. "Global warming" is as natural as "global cooling". Global warming is a distraction. It distracts from real issues like GMOs, water and air pollution, and deforestation. This is retarded, sorry but I am living this independent lifestyle, have been since the 60s,we used to push the idea of independence for individuals, now we let so-called scientists and govt burueacrats dictate to us! This is not how America is supposed to work, these people have a political iron in this fire, and are pushing a international agenda on us , we are alrewady seeing out homesteads and farms being threatened by international agreements like NAIS and WTO and others, now we may have our old woodburners and alcohol stills regulated or banned and our backyard tinkering put under bureauacratic obsevation,we are losing the spirit of the MEN I grew up with, yes we need to make sure pollution isnt spewing into the enviroment, but not pollution according to govt and so called berkley scientists, lets get America back to her roots, personal liberty will solve the problems we face, tyranny will never do us good, only harm!
