My inbox is stuffed this week with emails from bloggers and pundits heralding the release of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report confirming for the world that global warming is real and that we have, indeed, done our share to cause it. Not exactly earth-shattering news to those who’ve been singing that song for nearly a decade (or more), but validation from official sources is always nice. (The online magazine Grist did a great job of summing up why the report matters).

More exciting to me, though, was the attention several of Natural Home's good old friends received in big mainstream newspapers this week. The San Francisco Chronicle ran an article about our friend Darrel DeBoer’s kitchen, and our old pals Bill and Athena Steen, Frank Meyer and many others were featured in a New York Times article on earthen floors. We featured Frank’s fabulous straw bale addition in Natural Home back in 2000; it was one of the first homes I scouted for the magazine and remains one of my favorites (just as Frank and his wife, Amy, remain among my favorite homeowners…although I do have an admitted tendency to fall in love with them all).

It’s so much fun watching earthen floors make their way into the Times, even if the paper did somewhat snidely (and incorrectly) refer to them as “dirt floors”, and it’s even more fun to see pioneers like Darrel and Frank and the Steens getting the notoriety they so deserve. This is going to be a fun year.
