This Thursday, in honor of the 40th annual Earth Day celebration, the International League of Conservation Photographers will be auctioning off what they have selected as the 40 best nature photographs of all time. The group, which is comprised of more than 100 of the top conservation photographers in the world, chose the photos based on aesthetics, uniqueness, historical and scientific significance, and contribution to conservation efforts.
The auction will take place at Christie’s fine art auction house in New York City, and all proceeds will be split between four environmental organizations — Conservation International, Oceana, National Resources Defense Council and the Central Park Conservancy. Enjoy a few of the photos below, or check them all out at the ILCP Flickr page.
