The Super Green List: Safe, Sustainable and Healthy Seafood Is Possible

The Super Green List - General Seafood Illustration The Super Green List, put out and updated by The Monterey Bay Aquarium, de-mystifies the process from water to whetted appetite for our edible ocean friends. The list offers the best healthy and safe seafood choices: those with good supplies of healthy omega-3 fatty acids and low environmental impact.

The Super Green List features sustainable seafood from the Seafood Watch “Best Choices” list; a list that promotes healthy oceans by informing businesses and consumers of more “green” choices. The Super Green List includes albacore tuna, farmed oysters and farmed arctic char among its sustainable seafood. These and other choices listed contain low levels of contaminants, such as mercury and PCBs, and high levels of omega-3 fatty acids, which help reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke.

Growing up in a family that dished up seafood stews and fried fish, I never thought about how the delectable sea critters got there. I’d just ladle another spoonful of mussels with tamarind soup or pick off another piece of broiled catfish onto my plate without a second thought of how they were treated in their previous life. Now, with The Super Green List, I’ll think twice about which crabs I crack and what oysters I eat.
