What Is Your Favorite Do-It-Yourself Home Spa Recipe?

BubblesAfter a recent trip to a rather posh body care shop (where I was tempted by demonstrations of fragrant, shimmering bathtub bubbles), I was set on recreating the pampering experience at home. A look at the product ingredient labels, however, nearly put the kibosh on my home spa daydream. Determined to find a simpler bubble bath, I consulted the collective wisdom the Internet and discovered this basic bubble bath recipe from Annie B. Bond, author of Better Basics for the Home:

Natural Aromatherapy Bubble Bath Recipe 

Ingredients
1 cup each baking soda and cream of tartar
1/4 cup cornstarch
Up to 5 drops essential oil per bath (optional)
 

Combine the baking soda, cream of tartar, and cornstarch in a jar. Use a few tablespoons per bath. Add the essential oil at the time of the bath; otherwise the baking soda will neutralize the scent during storage. 

Pretty nice, right? Simple, inexpensive and easily customized to your own fragrance preferences, and all the basic ingredients can be found at the grocery store. This one is a clear win for DIY home spa enthusiasts.

But why stop at bubble bath? You can also make your own soap and lotion, try do-it-yourself aromatherapy, and make homeade face masks (including one so pure you could eat it).

I tried the bubble bath but didnt create any bubbles when its put in the bath. Am i missing something? Please help as my son is getting smellier as the days pass:)

My [current] favorite would have to be the body scrub! Herbal Oil Salt Exfoliator: Fine grained sea salt Almond or grapeseed oil Favorite essential herbal oil Cute jar I use a cute jar [found in antique malls, for instance] about the size of a half-pint. Fill it about 2/3 full with fine grained sea salt [from the grocery store]. Add almond or grapeseed oil until it covers the salt about an inch or so. Stir. I then add my favorite herbal oil or herbal oil mix, depending on whether I want to relax and de-stress or be invigorated. You can tie a cute matching ribbon around the top if you wish [it will eventually get oil on it]. To use, I step inside the tub and coat my skin evenly, briskly rubbing the salt and oil. I turn on a warm shower and wash away the excess salt, dead skin cells, and worries! While I don't recommend you use this more than once a week or so, it will leave your skin feeling wonderful and smelling heavenly!

THANK YOU Ozarkhomestader! That is a great recipe for foot scrub! I'll be giving that one a try soon.... and getting my young teen daughter to use it on her feet which tend towards dampness and peeling skin! just the trick!

I actually have two favorites. Lavender Bath Salts 1 cup epsom salts 2or 3 drops lavender essential oil. It is best to divide this into small bottles and let sit for 2-3 weeks, turning bottle from right side up to right side down every other day. Soy Milk Bath 1 cup powder soy milk (usually available at better health food stores.) 2-3 drops of your favorite essential oil. Shake vigorously and put a tablespoon in hot wate for a deloghtful bath. Again, I would divide this mixture into small bottles. Good tip: For anyone with sinus problems, rub the sides of your nose and the bridge of your nose with clary sage. The aroma opens the olfactory glands.

The best way to re-energize and smooth your feet at the same time is to spend some time on the beach (or a sand box or sand volleyball court or even the Great Sand Dunes National Park). Walk around bare foot in the sand and absorb some sunlight. Let the sand abrasive properties smooth your feet and release the tension. This is best when the sand isn't 100's of degrees and you cover up after awhile so not to get sunburned.
