In 1997, the Food and Drug Administration relaxed its restriction on direct-to-consumer drug advertising. As a result, pharmaceutical companies now spend billions to try to convince people to buy their drugs. In the continuing effort to bring American consumers reliable information, Consumers Union, the publisher of Consumer Reports, has launched a new public education campaign: Consumer Reports Best Buy Drugs. The free Web site offers concise, independently verified reports on the safety, effectiveness and affordability of drugs that treat everything from migraines and allergies to depression and Alzheimer’s disease.
