Self-reliance and sustainability in the 21st century.
The winner of the MOTHER EARTH NEWS Holy Cow homesteading sweepstakes took down-home generosity one step further by donating all of her winnings to a farmer in need. Elizabeth Kikuchi from Fleming County, Ky., donated her prize (valued at $11,254) to Jerry Hicks, a nearby organic meat producer, vegetable gardener and beekeeper. Jerry is truly thankful for his good luck and Elizabeth’s kindness. Her gifts will put him ahead with the development plans for his homestead, and he plans on donating one of his future calves to the 4-H; a program he wanted to join as a child but couldn’t afford.
The products Elizabeth donated include a registered Highland heifer from American Highland Cattle Association, a Hud-son Forest Equipment homesteader sawmill, a dual-action log splitter, a beekeeping kit from Brushy Mountain, a Winscombe chicken coop and more. Keep your eyes open for announcements regarding the 2013 Holy Cow homesteading sweepstakes.
