I've always been troubled by loose socks that seem to lie around mourning their mates, so I started putting them to use.

1. They're excellent for storing delicate Christmas ornaments; tuck ornament into the toe, then give the top a twist and fold the rest back over for safe storage.

2. Heavy athletic socks are ideal for slipping over your hand to do some quick dusting.

3. My favorite way to use old socks is as softballs for indoor games. Stuff one sock into the toe of another, tie it close next to the lump, then fold the top back over the toe. Repeat this tying off and folding until there is no sock left. You can stitch the top of the sock closed for a more secure softball if you wish.

Great Solar Window Heater! Back in 1977 you published an article on how to build a Solar Window Heater. I thought it would be worth a try, especially since I lived in Wisconsin at that time and I worked for an insulation company - meaning free, or at very minimal costs, solar heater materials. I built two units for my downstairs South facing windows. I was very pleasantly surprised at how well they worked, even on a overcast day! My heat would not even turn on in the day even if it were overcast and 15 degrees F. outside. The downside of it was that there was very little sunshine in January. But, to have a steady flow of "Hot" air come out while it was sunny during the other months, made it well worth it. They paid for themselves in less than a months time because my heating bill went down over 15% the first month. I got my idea from you September 1, 1997 article and I noticed today you had a similar article in your Feb 2, 2006 issue.
