New Regulations for Keeping Muscovy Ducks

Is it really illegal to keep domesticated Muscovy Ducks? Earlier this year, we explained in Keeping Muscovy Ducks is Now Illegal, that there was a misunderstanding that led to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) implementing new regulations regarding Muscovy ducks — both wild and domesticated versions. The problem is that there are significant differences between the two types of ducks, even though they’re the same species.

When the FWS Migratory Bird Program had more information, they realized that some additional revisions needed to be made, so they’ve proposed new language for the regulations. But before those take effect, there’s a period of public discussion. If you have something to say about this, now is the time to do so! You can submit comments until Dec. 30, 2010.

These ducks make excellent pets, and are essential in western Washington to control slugs in gardens. Domesticated Muscovy are affectionate birds, who come when called, demand attention from their people and are in many other ways “pets” rather than wild animals. Comparing a wild Muscovy to a Domesticated Muscovy is as appropriate as comparing a poodle to a wolf.

I have kept Muskovy ducks before, and think they are great birds. This new proposed regulation is a bad idea.

Don't do it!!! We should be able to raise whatever animals/livestock that works for us.

This definitely smells of NAIS. If passed as is each domestic muscovy duck must be marked by 6 weeks of age. If you raise muscovies and don't want to have to ID your birds you may wish to comment on this regulation revision. It also bans muscovies from being kept as pets.
