Joel Salatin's family opens their Polyface Farm in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley, once every three years for a field day celebrating "integrity food." This is the year and July 19 is the date.

"Most sustainable type conferences are held in hotels and non-farm venues and we like to offer something that's visceral, real, and right where things are happening," said Salatin. The Polyface Farm Field Day is now three decades old and attracts people from all walks of life. The concept of food integrity is vital as the discussion on changing the future of our food system comes to the table.

The day-long gala features walking tours of the pastured livestock and support infrastructure, including chick brooding and horticulture. A by-invitation-only trade show features organizations and businesses that supply the political and infrastructural support to keep the farm functioning. Intensive seminars and demonstrations as varied as marketing, rabbit rearing, and bandsaw operation offer many informational opportunities throughout the day.

Former and current interns, apprentice, and staff maintain positions around the farm to answer questions and host the event, which includes Polyface barbecued chicken, beef, and pork for lunch. This year the family will cap the attendance at 2,000. For more information and registration, see the ACRES Events Page.
