Country Lore: Clean Pine Pitch With Criso

Got pine pitch on your fingers? Try this handy tip to remove it. Originally published as "Clean Your...

In the October/November 2010 issue’s Country Lore, one of your readers wrote about using Crisco to clean pine pitch off of hands.

This reminded me of another use for Crisco. We used to live in an area where the city periodically recoated the streets with tar or oil. Our cat would inevitably walk in it and get the black goo on her paws, and we worried about her licking it off.

Crisco to the rescue! We rubbed the vegetable shortening into the cat’s paws, and it softened the tar enough to remove it without hurting her. We then washed her paws with soap to remove the shortening.
