Which Is the Best Garden Tractor?

Half garden tractorThe weather is warming up, and lawns and gardens are begging for some affection. With summer quickly approaching, it’s time for heavy-duty yard work. Nothing says, “I love my yard,” “My yard loves me,” and, “Have you seen my 26 horsepower, V-Twin, six-speed, 54-inch cutting deck machine?!” like a tractor.

Garden tractor owners can get pretty heated about their makes and models. Whether it’s Craftsman, John Deere, Cub Cadet or Sears, we’re guessing you have something to say about this subject.

Which garden tractor will you be mowing and hauling with this year? Which is the best garden tractor? High-quality tractors can cost a pretty penny (check out the Kubota GR2100 for $8,200 in this Popular Mechanics review). If you had unlimited funds, which dream garden tractors would you choose?

If you’re a serious garden tractor buff, check out Grit’s review of the book “Garden Tractors” by Oscar H. Will III. Search around on this site for more tractor information, or take a look at one of our sister publications, Grit and Farm Collector.

My dream tractor is green. - Not in color, but environmentally. There are EV forums that describe converting a car to electric, but an old riding tractor can also be converted to electric, and for less than buying a new mower if you are willing to do the work. Do a search for EV conversions and the forums will welcome you. A Curtis controller, an AC 6" motor and a few Trojan (yes they ARE a battery company) 6v batteries and you will be ready to mow.

I would probably stay with Ingersoll, My 89 446 with 48" mower and hydraulic drive rototiller has done a good job.
