Chickens naturally go into their coop to roost at dusk, but that’s about the time that many predators start hunting. When you’re not able to be home to close the coop door at the right time, your birds might be in danger. So, Mother Earth News is sponsoring a contest for the best design for a DIY automatic chicken coop door closer.

To submit your design for an automatic coop door closer, e-mail a description and photo to “letters (at symbol) MotherEarthNews.com.” Mail hard-copy entries to “Automatic Coop Door Closer” at Mother Earth News; 1503 SW 42nd St.; Topeka, KS 66609. We’ll publish the winning entry in the magazine, and the designer will win a free Brinsea Octagon 20 Eco incubator. Entries must be received by Dec. 31, 2011, to qualify.

If you want to hatch eggs, this incubator is a great choice. I’ve hatched ducks, pheasant and chickens in my Octagon 20 Eco, and the results have been impressive.
