Numerous organizations, including Humane Animal Farm Care, have developed standards for the humane treatment of farm animals.

The following article is posted with permission from Humane Farm Animal Care.

This humane animal care chart answers many of the questions about how the Certified Humane® program is different from other animal welfare certifications for chickens, pigs and beef cattle.

The chart is a side-by-side comparison of the Certified Humane® program, three other animal welfare labeling programs (Animal Welfare Approved, Global Animal Partnership and American Humane Certified), and the USDA certified organic program. In addition to the existing categories comparison — traceability, growth hormones, antibiotics, pasture, stocking density, sleep, transportation and slaughter, a “Feed Prohibitions” category has been added on page 2 of the chart. What an animal eats is a critical part of its overall well-being, and this new category shows what types of feed ingredients are prohibited on each program.
