If you’re passionate about heritage breed livestock, don’t miss the 2011 American Livestock Breeds Conservancy (ALBC) conference in Wichita, Kan., scheduled for Nov. 11 and 12 at the Sedgwick County Zoo.

In addition to useful how-to husbandry instruction and tips on how to manage the economic aspects of a heritage breed livestock operation, the conference will explore the underlying motivation for raising endangered heritage animals: to protect the biodiversity of our planet. Titled “Taking Stock — Knowledge, Economics and Rare Breeds,” the conference is designed to assist farmers with the unique facets of this type of venture, whether they raise heritage cattle, goats, poultry, sheep or swine — or even horses or asses.

Marketing advice, risk management techniques, cooking pointers ... it’s all covered at this gig. Oh, and while you’re there, check out the zoo’s unique collection of rare heritage livestock breeds. You’ll find more details at the ALBC website.
