Imagine growing enough food to feed your family for most of the year in just a 10x10 ft space. And Spring is the second best time to get started. Bill Griffin, a local native and the owner of Griffins Organics, has been growing food organically for over 45 years. He has been growing produce by this method for over 25 years. The class has very little theory and is mostly "get down and get your hands dirty" type practical info. On an actual small farm. This power workshop is 4-6 hours long (depending on questions and participation) and covers about the first half of Bill's gardening class. Everything on how to get your garden up and running, as well as companion plantings (they help your plants and confuse the bugs), and using bugs to fight bugs (aka bugs: the good, the bad, and the just plain weird). The cost for the workshop, $50 (per person/couple), covers the 2 books that the class uses. The information learned in this class will help you and your family for a lifetime. 2-8 pm.

End Date: 05/22/2016
Description: We are fortunate to have Phyllis Light, a 4th-generation herbalist, join us again this year in the upstate of SC! The Power of One: Simples and Taste. The traditional method of herb use in Southern and Appalachian Folk Medicine is the administration of herbal decoctions using Simples (single herbs). Our elders knew the power and wonder of knowing an herb intimately and using it in-depth. Join Phyllis for a history and rediscovery of the power of Simples as taken from her native tradition of Southern and Appalachian Folk Medicine. Herbs will be brewed and tasted during this class as we explore several native herbs and their simple uses. Together we’ll discover what that taste has to say about the medicinal properties of the plant and how the plant can be used. This is a hands-on, or rather, tongue-on, experiential class. You’ll be surprised how much information a simple taste can reveal. As part of this class, we’ll also have a plant walk around the property and discuss traditional Southern uses of local plants and their taste. This won’t be your typical plant walk. Sunday, May 22 – Looking at Assessment (Note: we’ll also have a taste testing today.) Tongue Assessment. Looking at the tongue is an easy and quick way to providing information that can be used in finding patterns of dysfunction. We’ll discuss the basics of tongue assessment using Southern Folk Medicine taste patterns. We’ll look view a powerpoint of various types of tongues. And then, we’ll look at each other’s tongue. Tongue assessment doesn’t just look for physical ailments and their tongue patterns but also mental/emotional imbalance and those patterns. You’ll be amazed how much you can tell about a person by looking at their tongue. Hands, Fingers and Nails Assessment. Signs gathered in a visual assessment of the hands, fingers and nails provide information about a person’s nutritional status and can also be helpful in finding the perfect herbal remedy for specific complaints. This class will cover signs of healthy hands, fingers and nails as well as common signs of health imbalance. Color, texture, lines, shape, moistness, and tone are just a few of the factors taken into account in this visual assessment class. This is an interesting and fun class and you’ll find that you are looking at everyone’s fingernails when you get home. Please take off all fingernail polish for this class. Face Assessment. This class will discuss ways that the face gives us information about the health of a person. We’ll look at face shape, skin color, placement of lines, and areas of the face that correspond to various body systems. This is an eye-opening but fun class. 10am-5pm. Cost is $240. Early Bird price is $225 if paid in full with cash or check April 1; otherwise, the $100 deposit is due April 1, and the $140 balance is due May 1. Registration details are on our website. Registration closes April 1.

Description: Closeness to Nature, animals, plants, and dreamtime are characteristics most frequently associated with the shamanic path. In this class we will learn about the three selves of the shamans: conscious, animal, and dream selves, and why they are so important. Then we will study medicine animals – the animals serve as the spokespersons, so to speak, of our natural self and our unconscious. As we do this we will study the corresponding medicine plants, because the most powerful plants are associated with medicine animals and we learn back and forth, from kingdom to kingdom. A few examples: bear (burdock, angelica, spikenard), elk and deer (wild bergamot and many mints, sumach, cleavers, dogwood---despite the name), rabbit (rabbit tobacco, nettle, wild yam), turtle (gravel root, boneset, oak, black walnut), wolf (agrimony, cinquefoil, true solomon’s seal), panther (valerian, catnip, chamomile, cramp bark), underwater panther/catfish (white water lily, blue flag, true and false solomon’s seal, marshmallow root, slippery elm, mucilages). 10am-5pm both days. Cost is $250. Early Bird price is $235 if paid in full with cash or check by September 1; otherwise, he $100 deposit is due September 1, the $150 balance is due October 1.
