Description: This Permaculture Design Certification Course will dive deep into sustainable design and you will gain first-hand insight into the practical strategies, skills, and techniques that The Ecology Center has applied to transform an empty dirt lot into a thriving ecological oasis. Throughout the course, The Ecology Center’s founder, Evan Marks, along with leading permaculture and sustainability experts in their respective fields will share inspiring real-life experiences and wisdom. The Permaculture Design Certification Course will include lectures, site visits, and practical applications, for a total of 72 hours, spread across 3 months, every other weekend (6 weekends total). During the course, you will apply what you’ve learned in a number of real-life projects in the community that may include redesigning homes, school gardens or public spaces. Description: Anderson Learning Site - 2:30 P.M. Friday, to 5 P.M. Sunday the 28th. ​Learning Objectives: The fish gig; Arapuca bird trap; the spring pole, the A-snare. Every primitive society developed their own methods of harvesting wild game as an important part of their diet. Naturally, hundreds of successful techniques have been handed-down through the generations. Now, it’s your turn to learn a few of these skills! In this 2-night session, students will become proficient with at least five different tools, snares and traps and learn how to employ them: from the Fish Gig to the A-Snare for medium game. This intermediate, in-depth course will challenge you to find the natural materials needed to create these useful implements from the forest around you. You will also learn the proper use and employment strategy that delivers a high-protein meal for yourself and others. This class is two and a quarter days long beginning late noon on a Friday afternoon and ending Sunday afternoon. Description: Closeness to Nature, animals, plants, and dreamtime are characteristics most frequently associated with the shamanic path. In this class we will learn about the three selves of the shamans: conscious, animal, and dream selves, and why they are so important. Then we will study medicine animals – the animals serve as the spokespersons, so to speak, of our natural self and our unconscious. As we do this we will study the corresponding medicine plants, because the most powerful plants are associated with medicine animals and we learn back and forth, from kingdom to kingdom. A few examples: bear (burdock, angelica, spikenard), elk and deer (wild bergamot and many mints, sumach, cleavers, dogwood---despite the name), rabbit (rabbit tobacco, nettle, wild yam), turtle (gravel root, boneset, oak, black walnut), wolf (agrimony, cinquefoil, true solomon’s seal), panther (valerian, catnip, chamomile, cramp bark), underwater panther/catfish (white water lily, blue flag, true and false solomon’s seal, marshmallow root, slippery elm, mucilages). 10am-5pm both days.
