Get to know Dan Adams of Earthineer.
What are you going to speak about at the MOTHER EARTH NEWS FAIR?
We’ll be talking about our electric car project. This car has been driven back and forth to work for 3 years now (which has come in handy with the rising gas prices). During our workshop, we’ll talk about why electric motors are more efficient than gas, discuss what we did when making our electric car, and what our next electric car project will be. It will get technical sometimes, but we’ll keep it as general as possible (and will provide a handout with links to the more technical discussions).
What are you most looking forward to sharing with FAIR attendees?
We’re exhibiting at the FAIR as well, showing off our social network for sustainable living, so we’re obviously interested in getting the word out… but it’s the enthusiasm that we’re most looking forward to sharing with FAIR attendees. It’s fantasic being in an environment where everyone shares your passion.
Tell us about your background with your particular topic.
The electric car started as one of many “hobby” projects. Don Adams owns American Technical Services, which builds and services high power transmitter systems. Many of the same electrical design folks at ATS were used in creating the electric motor propulsion. The project started small, from “go kart” to a final road-worthy automobile. This has given us a wealth of knowledge and information that we’re more than pleased to share. Don Adams has been a long-time DIY enthusiast, and Dan Adams (as the resident programmer) will be the one coding the IGBTs for the next stage of the project.
Why should fairgoers attend your presentation?
It will be entertaining! We built an electric car before the DMV had a classification for it. Our electric car is licensed as a rotary engine with zero cylinders, because they didn’t have “electric car” as an option in their software. When we had the car inspected, we really did get the response, “what the f*** is this thing?!” Whether you’re just curious or if you’re a serious DIY enthusiast who wants to see what we did and how we did it, there will be something for everyone.
How will you get to the FAIR, and how far do you have to travel?
We’ll be driving from Kentucky. It’s roughly a 5 hour drive for us.
What are you most looking forward to at the FAIR?
Talking with attendees, fellow exhibitors and speakers. No matter what your skill level, it’s a great opportunity to learn.
What advice do you have for attendees?
This is your community. You’re among your people! The energy at these FAIRS is fantasic. Take the opportunity to strike up conversations and ask questions.
If you were stranded on a deserted island and could have only one thing, what would you choose?
My family. Does each member of my family get one thing as well? 😉
Thanks, Dan. We’ll see you at the FAIR!
