Alex Wilson has been a respected and inspirational pioneer in green building—not for his building or design skills but for his words. The founder of and executive editor of Environmental Building News has been setting the record straight on good green building practices since he founded the publication in 1992. From his quiet offices in Vermont, he launches conversations that reach across the globe. Green builders trust Wilson’s depth of understanding, accuracy and intuition, and he challenges them on crucial issues such as buildings’ carbon emissions and building-integrated food production.

For that, Wilson has just earned the Hanley Foundation and EcoHome magazine’s Hanely Award for Vision and Leadership in Sustainable Housing, awarded annually to an individual who has helped advance sustainable housing in the United States. The award comes with a $50,000 grant.

“Alex is the best example I know of the adage, ‘It’s amazing what you can accomplish when you don’t care who gets the credit,’” says U.S. Green Building Council president Rick Fedrizzi. Wilson helped develop the USGBC and its LEED programs.

Wilson will receive the award at a ceremony November 17 at the Greenbuild conference in Chicago. “I hope to use the funds to step back and take a deeper look at the urgent challenges we are facing—and what we in the building industry can do about it,” he says.
