Rescued from Landfill, Coffee Bags Become Unique Accessories

James Curren, a Minnesota fair trade organic coffee roaster who has committed himself to conserving Earth’s natural resources in the running of his business, created a company specifically to convert by-products of the coffee roasting process--empty burlap bags--into beautiful and versatile messenger bags, totes, and home accessories.

To date, JavaCycle has saved more than 40 tons of burlap coffee bag from landfills, and created thousands of bags, pouches and decorative pillows. Sewn in Minnesota by a network of small and independently-owned sewing groups, the unique accessories also utilize recycled materials for the linings, straps and tags.

“Some of these burlap bags have amazing graphics...especially bags that once carried Rainforest Alliance certified coffees. To see them destined for the landfill is such a waste. I am real pleased that we can give them a second life, and to be a part of making useful and versatile items from something that others consider worthless.”

In addition to creating these unique items, Curren is also proud to provide opportunities for the members of the local sewing groups who serve as his production team.

Retailers are enthusiastic about the popularity of JavaCycle products. “We are always looking for gift items that are unique and environmentally sensitive to sell in our coffee shop,” states a Delaware retailer. “JavaCycle products are popular with a wide range of people...from students, to moms, to travelers, and more.”

JavaCycle can also customize the bags with screen printing and/or leather tags. Totes and messenger bags are available in a variety of sizes, with designs as limitless as the graphics on coffee sacks. Zippered accessories cases and pillows are the newest items in the product line.
