Need a new heating or cooling system? Is your old water heater outdated and inefficient? The Home Star “Cash for Caulkers” program offers rebates for replacement heating systems, replacement water heaters, geothermal heat pumps and air-source air conditioners and heat pumps. Before you buy, find out what the rebates will cover as well as required installation procedures.

Air-source air conditioner or heat pump: To receive this rebate, the new air-source air conditioner must meet or exceed SEER 16 and EER 13, and the new air-source heat pump must meet or exceed SEER 15, EER 12.5 and HSPF 8.5. Both kinds of systems must be installed according to ANSI/ACCA Standard 5 QI-2007.
Rebate amount: $1,500

Geothermal heat pump: The pump must be Energy Star-qualified and meet Tier 2 efficiency requirements. It must also be installed in accordance with ANSI/ACCA Standard 5 QI-2007.
Rebate amount: $1,000

Heating system: On this rebate, the amount awarded depends on what you buy. With the exception of wood or pellet furnaces, boilers and stoves, all replacement systems must be installed according to ANSI/ACCA Standard 5 QI-2007.

• Natural gas or propane furnace: Natural gas furnaces must have AFUE rating of 92 or higher; propane furnaces must have an AFUE rating of 95 or higher.
Rebate amount: $750

• Natural gas or propane boiler: The boiler must have an AFUE rating of 90 or higher.
Rebate amount: $1,000

• Oil furnace: Oil furnaces must have an AFUE rating of 86 or higher and use an electrically commutated blower motor.
Rebate amount: $1,000

• Oil boiler: Oil boilers must have an AFUE rating of 86 or higher and have temperature resets or thermal purge controls.
Rebate amount: $1,000

• Wood or pellet furnace, boiler or stove: The new system must meet at least 75 percent of the home’s heating demands, and the home must have a distribution system such as ducts, vents, blowers or affixed fans so the heat can reach all or mot parts of the home. Wood stoves can replace existing wood stoves but not pellet stoves and must be certified by an EPA administrator.
Rebate amount: $500

Water heater replacement: Next to heating and cooling systems, water heaters use the most energy. Replacing an inefficient water heater could save you thousands of dollars over a decade. The Cash for Caulkers bill offers rebates on several different types of water heaters.

• Natural gas or propane condensing storage water heater with an energy factor of 0.80
Rebate amount: $1,000

• Natural gas or propane storage or tankless water heater with a 90 percent or higher thermal efficiency
