Cistern with Pond Liner? Options

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone saw any problem with making a cistern by simply digging a hole, covering any rough areas with clay and then putting an EPDM pond liner in it.  I would also build a small urbanite wall around the top and make a cover of some kind for it.  If you have any ideas on a cover that would be helpful.  I'm trying to avoid using cement.

The water will be used for drinking and other household purposes and the water itself will be harvested from a sheet metal roof.

Thanks ahead of time for any thoughts, ideas, or concerns.

I suspect it would hold water just fine, but I wouldn't drink from it unless I knew for sure the EPDM was rated for drinking water - I'm betting that it's not.  Look for an NSF certification.
