I have just installed a hilkoil unit in my woodburning furnace. Can someone tell me if it is ok to leave my hot water heater on or do I have to turn it off. It is electric.

Yes,with this setup you do have to turn off your electric/gas water heater because the woodfire is'nt controlled by an electric damper as it is on a wood boiler.Water is constantly flowing thru the hilkoil and then storing the heat in the water heater.I do hope you have a 3 way tempering valve on your hot water out because the water can get extremely, dangerously hot.190-200 degrees is not uncommon. The max a person can stand is 140-150 and thats scalding. It's not that the electric'll come on because the temps involved  with the hilkoil are way higher than the electric water heater can do with the thermostats they come with. But,that being said there's no problem  if you install an aquastat in the hot water out line coming from the stove.Connect the aquastat to the coil of a contactor that can handle the water heater's electrical load so that when the temp drops to below the setting on the aquastat frrom the hot water out ( sensing the fire being out) the electric'll come on,heating your water. When you get a fire going the contactor will drop out, letting the wood heat your water..
