Testing my new cookers? Options

Home pressure cookers operate at 15 PSI usually by a weight over a port.

Testing simply consists of putting some water in the pot and seeing if the weight (whistler)  rocks and there is no leaking of steam around the seal. It is a a good idea to rub some vegetable oil around the top of the pot where the gasket sits, so it slides on easily without twisting the gasket, when closing the top cover.

The ones that need tested are the pressure canners that have a guage.  In that case you are testing the guage itself.  If you have that type, usually you can take it to an extension agency for testing.

I bought two pressure cookers at a local auction. (Paid about $5 ea) I read some time back that older pressure cookers need to be tested somehow. Anyone know anything about this? I do have acess to guages at work where we test large metal tanks we build up to 150 psi. Rosco
